Can you change an exoskeleton's battery while walking?

The answer in detail

On a long outing, the battery is the first limiting factor. Two strategies exist: one large fixed battery, or a battery you swap. The second lets you carry a light reserve rather than recharge, but it adds weight and cost. It matters mostly for multi-hour hikes or work days without access to a socket, less for short outings.

Among the models in our catalog, VIGX highlights this feature most. For Hypershell and Dnsys, our pages give charging times and ranges, but do not describe hot swapping.

What the pages say

ModelWhat the page says
VIGX π Plusdouble battery, over 24,000 steps, hot swap without switching off
VIGX Ant-H1 Probattery of about 250 g, 12,000 steps per charge, replaceable in 3 seconds (magnetic connection)
Hypershell (X Series)88-minute charge stated; swapping not specified on our pages
Dnsys X1base range of 20 km; swapping not specified on our pages

This information comes from manufacturers and our pages. Check the official page to see whether your model's battery is removable, and whether swapping during use is allowed by the manual: that is not always the case, even when the battery detaches.

How to decide

  1. Estimate the duration of your longest outings in walking hours.
  2. Compare it with the stated range, allowing for weight, terrain and cold.
  3. If it exceeds the range, look at a replaceable-battery model rather than a bigger battery.
  4. Add the price and weight of the spare battery to your budget.
  5. Ask whether the spare battery is sold separately and what its warranty is.

Limits and precautions

  • Lithium batteries are subject to transport rules, notably on planes.
  • A spare battery adds to the weight carried and to the budget.
  • Stated ranges are the manufacturers', with no independent measurement read.
  • Handle the battery according to the manual, especially in rain or extreme cold.

For transport, read our question on the plane and the lithium battery and the one on charging.

Key takeaways

Swapping a battery mid-outing is described only for the VIGX models in our catalog: hot on the π Plus, in 3 seconds on the Ant-H1 Pro. For Hypershell and Dnsys, our pages do not specify it. Estimate your outing duration, compare it with the stated range and check the official page before buying a spare battery, asking for its price and warranty. A full 88-minute recharge, as Hypershell states, is often simpler than a second battery for a lunch break.
