How do you charge a powered exoskeleton?

The answer in detail

On Hypershell X Series exoskeletons, the 5,000 mAh (72 Wh) intelligent battery charges over USB-C. The manufacturer recommends a charger of 65 W or more that supports the Power Delivery (PD) protocol, and states a full charge takes about 88 minutes, which our product pages confirm.

If the charger or cable does not support PD, the battery charges at reduced speed, so more slowly. For Dnsys, our product page does not state the charging time: check with the manufacturer before buying.

What the manufacturer says

Here is the information Hypershell publishes for its X Series batteries.

  • Capacity: 5,000 mAh intelligent battery, or 72 Wh.
  • Models covered: the support article names the X Go, X Pro and X Carbon.
  • Quick swap: a quick-release mechanism lets you change the battery in moments.
  • Accessories: extra batteries and a 4-port charging hub, which charges up to four batteries in sequence.
  • Operating temperature: from -10 to 60 °C, and from -20 to 60 °C for the anti-cold version.

For the Ultra X, the manufacturer's product page lists two 72 Wh batteries supplied and a range of 30 km per battery in Eco mode. The support article does not name this model: check its charging procedure in its manual. On stated range, our product pages give 15 km for the Go X and 17.5 km for the Pro X and Carbon X.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Take a USB-C charger of 65 W or more that supports Power Delivery, and a suitable USB-C cable.
  2. Plug the charger in following the manual to know whether the battery charges on the device or after removal.
  3. Let it charge for about 88 minutes for a full charge, according to the manufacturer.
  4. Before a long outing, also charge the spare battery if you have one.
  5. Store the battery and charger together so nothing is forgotten at departure.

Common mistakes

Charging problems mostly come from hardware details or a lack of planning.

  • Using a charger or cable without Power Delivery: charging becomes slow, as the manufacturer notes.
  • Setting out on a day longer than the stated range without a spare battery.
  • Forgetting that range is a manufacturer-stated value: it varies with terrain, elevation gain and your weight.
  • Ignoring the operating temperature ranges given by the manufacturer.

Key takeaways

A powered exoskeleton charges over USB-C: about 88 minutes with a 65 W PD charger for the Hypershell X Go, Pro and Carbon, according to the manufacturer. For long days, a quick-swap spare battery saves waiting. Check the exact procedure for your model in its manual and on its spec sheet, for example that of the Hypershell Pro X.
