What real-world range does a hiking exoskeleton have?

The answer in detail

The real-world range is not a single figure: it depends on you, the terrain and the assistance mode. The published figures are the manufacturers'. In our catalog, they range from 15 km for the Hypershell Go X to 30 km for the Hypershell Ultra X, the manufacturer specifying that these 30 km are achieved in Eco mode.

An autoevolution tester used a Hypershell Pro X for a month, walking, running, cycling and on stairs. He reports the stated 17.5 km range and a charge in 88 minutes, without flagging a marked gap with these values. It is one person and one model: it is not a laboratory measurement.

How it works in practice

The battery powers the hip motors, and the energy spent varies with the effort demanded. For Dnsys, our product page describes two modes: an Eco mode, which reduces power to maximize range on fairly flat terrain, and a Sport mode, for steep climbs and technical terrain.

Who it is for and when

For a day hike, compare the stated range with the planned distance, keeping a margin: climbs, pack weight and temperature can reduce it. Quick-swap spare batteries, as on the Hypershell X Series, let you extend the outing well beyond a single charge.

To choose between brands, read our Hypershell vs Dnsys comparison, and for charging, our article on charging a powered exoskeleton.

Limits and precautions

  • All stated values come from manufacturers and are measured under their test conditions.
  • Terrain, elevation gain, your weight, pack weight and assistance mode change the result.
  • Ranges in steps (VIGX) and in kilometers (other brands) cannot be compared directly.
  • Hypershell also states operating temperature ranges, which should be respected.

Our Ultra X product page also mentions up to 35 km in optimal mode, while the manufacturer page states 30 km in Eco mode: use the more cautious figure to plan your outing.

Key takeaways

The real-world range of a hiking exoskeleton can differ from the stated one depending on conditions, and we found only one independent test, on a single model. Plan a safety margin, choose the assistance mode to suit your route and carry a spare battery if the model allows it. To place the models, read the page of the Hypershell Ultra X.
