How do you put on and adjust a ski exoskeleton?
The answer in detail
Installation happens in two stages. The first setup, done only once, fits the device to your boots and to the length of your legs. After that, putting it on each day is quick: one to two minutes while getting dressed according to the manufacturer's FAQ, two to three minutes according to our product page.
The manufacturer recommends doing this first setup indoors, before heading to the slopes. Its FAQ speaks of a few minutes, while our product page announces 20 to 30 minutes for the first installation: allow plenty of time, especially if you fit permanent connectors yourself.
What the manufacturer's instructions say
Here is what the manufacturer states about installing and adjusting the Ski-Mojo.
- Boots: the device fits almost all alpine and ski touring boots. For rental boots, temporary connectors go on with nothing more than the supplied kit.
- Permanent connectors: for your own boots, they are fitted with the supplied kit; drilling with a 4 mm bit is needed if you install them yourself.
- Length: telescopic rods adjust to the length of the shin and thigh bone, for all adults over 1.55 m.
- Engaging: a switch on each thigh. Lowered, it engages the assistance; raised, it stops it.
- Spring: it is chosen by your weight, not your height (see our guide to the Blue, Silver or Gold spring)
According to our product page, the pack contains the legs, an adjustable harness, temporary and permanent connectors, a tool kit, a carry bag and an installation guide.
Step-by-step instructions
These steps repeat the manufacturer's public information. The exact assembly order is in the supplied installation guide and in the video on its help page.
- Fit the connectors to your ski boots: temporary ones for rental boots, permanent ones for your own.
- Adjust the telescopic rods to the length of your shin and thigh bone.
- Put on the harness and close the front clip.
- Connect the upper rods to the harness.
- Lower the switch on each thigh to engage the assistance, or raise it to stop it.
- Try it indoors, bending your knees, before the first run.
To take it off, simply undo the harness at the front clip and disconnect the upper rods from the harness: the manufacturer states about fifteen seconds.
Common mistakes
Most annoyances come from simple oversights that the manufacturer itself points out.
- Walking with the springs engaged: walking becomes harder, so switch the assistance off to move about on foot.
- Boarding a chairlift with the assistance engaged: the manufacturer says it is not a problem, but recommends switching it off before boarding.
- Storing the device damp: the only routine care mentioned is drying it before storage.
- Changing boots without changing connectors: new boots need new permanent connectors.
- Skipping the service: the manufacturer recommends a professional check after 70 to 90 days of use.
Key takeaways
Set the device up once, indoors, taking your time: boots, rod length, harness, then switches. The daily routine then takes one to two minutes according to the manufacturer. Switch the assistance off to walk, dry the device after use and follow the supplied installation guide, along with the video on the manufacturer help page.
