Hip or knee exoskeleton: which one to choose?

The answer in detail

Two families of devices coexist. Hip exoskeletons, motorized, help lift the leg and propel the stride: this is the case for the Hypershell Pro X, Carbon X and Ultra X, the Dnsys X1 and the VIGX models in our catalog. They are designed for walking and hiking.

Knee exoskeletons act directly on the joint. The Ski-Mojo is a mechanical system for skiing, with no battery. At Dnsys, the Z1 modules attach to the X1 to add knee assistance, in the bundles sold with a single or dual module.

In other words, hip and knee are not mutually exclusive: some setups combine both, and the right choice depends on where the effort or discomfort concentrates. A hiker who climbs a lot will first look for a hip device; a skier whose knee tires at the end of the day will look at a knee system.

How to choose

  1. Define the main use: walking on varied terrain, skiing, or supporting a fragile knee.
  2. If fatigue comes mostly from breathing and legs on climbs, look at a hip model.
  3. If the discomfort is located at the knee, especially on descents or when skiing, look at a knee system.
  4. Check weight, stated range and size before buying.
  5. Consult a health professional if you have a known knee condition.

Limits and precautions

  • None of these devices is presented as a treatment: they ease effort, they do not cure.
  • Assistance figures are manufacturer claims.
  • A hip model does not replace knee support, and vice versa.
  • This is not medical advice: for persistent pain, ask a doctor or a physiotherapist.

Key takeaways

Choose a hip exoskeleton for walking and hiking, and a knee exoskeleton for skiing or a fragile knee. The Hypershell, Dnsys X1 and VIGX models assist the stride, while the Ski-Mojo and Dnsys Z1 modules target the joint. Check weight, range and size, and ask for medical advice if you have a knee condition. For skiing, read our complete ski and knee guide.
