How much does a hiking exoskeleton weigh and is it a nuisance?

The answer in detail

Our catalog product pages state weights between 1.8 kg and about 2.3 kg for powered walking exoskeletons. The difference is small from one model to another: at this level, wearing comfort matters as much as the listed figure.

Is it a nuisance? We found only one detailed independent test, that of a Hypershell Pro X by an autoevolution tester. He reports that the padded areas get hot during intense effort, that he finished a 5 km run with the padding soaked, that range of motion is limited when seated or bending, and that the hip hinge click distracted him. He also notes a learning phase.

The criteria that matter

  • The listed weight: it varies with what it includes. For the Ultra X, the manufacturer page gives 1.7 kg net and 2.5 kg total.
  • Wear: weight distribution, straps, padding, breathability.
  • Mobility: what the device allows when you sit, bend or step over.
  • Transport: our Hypershell Go X product page says it folds to slip into a 20-liter backpack.
  • Noise: the tester mentions motors and clicks, audible in public.

Depending on your situation

The right choice depends on what you expect from the device and how you walk.

  • Long hikes with a loaded pack: the device's weight adds to the pack's; also look at distribution and adjustment.
  • Short or occasional outings: a foldable model, easy to stow in the pack, may be enough.
  • Heat or intense effort: the breathability of the padding becomes a criterion in its own right.

Key takeaways

The walking exoskeletons in our catalog weigh 1.8 to about 2.3 kg according to product pages. That weight is fairly modest, but comfort depends on padding, heat, mobility and fit, with a learning phase. Try one before buying if possible, and check what the stated weight includes. To choose, read our Hypershell vs Dnsys comparison and the page of the Hypershell Carbon X.
